About Us

Red State BBQ was founded in October 2010 by Scott Ahlschwede. An equine vet by profession, Texas native, and a darn good grill master in his own right, Scott simply wanted a place to have some good barbecue and a beer. As luck would have it he found the lovely Sunset Motel with the old Sunset Restaurant out in front. Ever since, people stopping at the little roadside BBQ joint on U.S. 25 have been able to enjoy brisket, ribs, chicken and pork on a daily basis along with all the great side dishes we have to offer.

As for the name? ...People often ask where the name Red State comes from. Truth be told it came about as an offhand comment between friends. While watching the election returns one night Scott turned to a friend and said, "You ever notice how all the good barbecue comes from the Red State?" And there the name was born.

In 2012 Scott moved off to New York and decided it was time to give someone else the reigns. However, no changes have been made to the basic menu, just some additions. We still use Scott's original dry rub recipes, and the brisket, ribs, chicken, pork and sausage are still smoked low and slow.

All of the sides are made daily and we are Kentucky Proud. The peach bread pudding is homemade daily too. And what makes it even better? ...A scoop of Four Generations ice cream.

So sit back, enjoy the funky cool surroundings of the little roadside barbecue joint that could. Where we strive everyday to do barbecue the way you want it to be...Good. We appreciate your patronage and hope to see you soon.
